“For a moment, time stands still. This is unadorned, closely recorded jazz from a trio that gently compels and convinces.”
Amanda Kuyper, NRC Handelsblad
Maarten Hogenhuis (1986) is one of Hollands leading young saxophonists and composers. He is a member of the exhilarating powerjazzgroup BRUUT!, the two-drummer band Krupa & The Genes and leads the Maarten Hogenhuis Trio. He was also a member of The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble (led by Reinier Baas) and is a much sought-after sideman, which resulted in the collaboration with a wide variety of international artists. In 2013, Maarten won the prestigious Keep an Eye International Jazz Award with his trio (Best Soloist & Best Band). In 2014, he was granted the Laren Singer Jazz Award, as well as the Conservatorium Talent Award.
After the release of his debut album 4/3 in 2014, he released his highly anticipated second album 'mimicry' as a bandleader in January 2017. On May 1 2019, his third album Rise & Fall was released, which was very well-received by the Dutch press.
In 2019, Maarten was selected for the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival Composition Assignment. He wrote 10 compositions for a new band featuring Bruno Calvo, Mete Erker, Joris Roelofs, Phil Donkin & Mark Schilders. The jury chose Maarten because "he impressed them with his great melodic lines. (...) He can compose gripping music with very little means (...)" This music by Maarten Hogenhuis Trio +3 was released only digitally.
In 2021 and 2022, Maarten will be the artistic leader of the prestigious National Youth Jazz Orchestra - a two-year project in which he will be working with some of Holland’s most talented young jazz musicians. Besides that, he will be performing and recording with singer Thomas Azier and Maarten recently released a duo album with guitarist Jesse van Ruller. Also, BRUUT! just released their most recent album 'Zest' and they will be touring all year. Check out tour dates below.
